Located at the corner of 1st Street and Lorena Street in Boyle Heights, this three-story indoor marketplace has been a gathering place for the Latino community since 1968.
If you've never been, picture a traditional Mexican market brought to life in the heart of East LA: the smell of fresh churros, buckets of mole paste in every color, mariachi music drifting down from the top floor, and vendors who've been selling the same treasured goods for decades. It's not just a market — it's a memory.
El Mercadito was founded in 1968 by Art Chaya on the former site of the Boyle Heights Lumber Company. It originally served the Mexican, Japanese, and Italian communities that called Boyle Heights home. In 1988, Pedro Rosado — an immigrant from Yucatán who had worked his way up from janitor to market owner — took over and shaped it into the cultural institution it is today. His family continues to run it.
Today it's officially named El Mercado de Los Ángeles, but to the community, it will always be "El Mercadito" or "El Mercadito de Los Mariachis" — named for the live mariachi bands that perform on the top floor every single day of the year.

Parking on 1st Street near Lorena can be challenging, especially on weekends when families come out in full force. The surrounding residential streets have permit zones, and the area near the Indiana Metro station is often congested.
